Platform Engineering

The boring infrastructure that makes shipping fast

Architecture, infrastructure as code, and the pipeline that gets your software from a commit to production. Built so it's reproducible, reviewable, and survivable by whoever inherits it.

Our engineering team brings 20+ years in operations, and the pattern doesn't change: teams don't get slow because their engineers are slow. They get slow because deploying is scary, because nobody's sure what's in production, and because the one person who understood the Terraform left.

What's Included

AWS architecture and design

Designed for what you're actually running, with the cost modelled before anything gets built. AWS Certified Solutions Architect on the team, and the design is delivered as a document and diagrams you can act on with or without us.

Not AWS-only, deliberately. Terraform, Jenkins, GitHub Actions and Kubernetes aren't AWS services, and plenty of good architecture decisions involve not buying the managed version. We run production workloads on k3s, Proxmox and DigitalOcean alongside AWS, and we'll tell you when the cheaper answer is the right one.

Infrastructure as code

Terraform from scratch, or migrating what was built by hand in the console. Reusable modules, remote state done properly, and a CI path so infrastructure changes get reviewed like code.

Migration is the case people underestimate. Importing an existing estate into Terraform is where the traps live — attributes that come back null, write-only fields that force a replacement, plans that offer to destroy what they've just adopted. We've hit all three on our own infrastructure, and we know what they look like before the apply.

CI/CD pipelines

Build, test, deploy, and — the part that gets skipped — roll back. Including the deployment safety work: health-gating before traffic moves, atomic switches, and making a retry safe to run twice.

Also under this heading

  • Monitoring and alerting. Setting it up, or auditing what's already there. We set it up accurately, so you don't end up with a service that looks alive but really isn't — the process running and the health check returning 200 while the thing it's meant to be doing has stopped. That's the failure worth paying someone to go looking for, because nothing else will tell you.
  • Jira and Confluence. Workflow design, cleanup and documentation. Audit and remediation: the workflows nobody can retire, the custom fields slowing every screen, the spaces with no index, the automation that silently stopped firing, and the paid licences on deactivated users that usually pay for the engagement.

Fixed scope, fixed price. Each of these is quoted as a flat fee against a written scope, so you know the number before work starts.

Not sure what you need yet? Technical consultation is $200/hour, two hours minimum. You show us what you've got, we talk it through, and you get a written recommendation and diagrams. Nothing of yours gets touched.

If you then commission the work, the consultation fee comes off the price. If you'd rather take the plan and build it yourself, that's a perfectly good outcome — the advice is yours either way.
